ADAS Camera Calibration

Essential recalibration of your vehicle's safety cameras and sensors after windscreen replacement.

What is ADAS?

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are a suite of electronic safety features built into modern vehicles. These systems use cameras, sensors, and radar — many of which are mounted on or behind the windscreen — to help drivers avoid collisions and stay safe on the road.

Common ADAS features include:

  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
  • Traffic Sign Recognition
  • Rain-sensing wipers and auto-dimming mirrors
  • Head-Up Display (HUD)

Why Calibration is Essential

When a windscreen is replaced, even a tiny change in the position of the glass can throw off the alignment of ADAS cameras and sensors. A misalignment of just one degree can result in the camera being several metres off target at a distance of 100 metres.

Without proper recalibration after windscreen replacement:

  • Lane departure warnings may activate incorrectly or not at all
  • Emergency braking systems could fail to detect obstacles
  • Adaptive cruise control may not maintain safe following distances
  • Your vehicle may fail its MOT
  • Your insurance could be invalidated

At AWG Windscreens, we use the latest manufacturer-approved diagnostic equipment to recalibrate your ADAS systems to factory specifications.

Static vs Dynamic Calibration

Different vehicles require different calibration methods. We offer both types to cover all makes and models.

Static Calibration

Static calibration is performed indoors at one of our branches using specialist target boards and diagnostic equipment. The vehicle is positioned at a precise distance from a calibration target, and the camera system is adjusted to exact manufacturer specifications.

  • Performed in a controlled environment
  • Uses manufacturer-specific target boards
  • Highly precise alignment
  • Required by most vehicle manufacturers
  • Takes approximately 1–2 hours

Dynamic Calibration

Dynamic calibration is performed by driving the vehicle on the road at a specific speed for a set distance, while the diagnostic system relearns the camera's position relative to road markings and surroundings.

  • Performed on the road in real driving conditions
  • Requires a specific speed and distance (typically 20–30 minutes of driving)
  • Suitable for certain vehicle makes and models
  • Can be combined with static calibration for dual-camera systems
  • Ideal for mobile service appointments

Which Vehicles Need Calibration?

Most vehicles manufactured from 2015 onwards have at least one ADAS feature requiring calibration. Here are some common makes that typically need recalibration after windscreen replacement:

Audi

BMW

Ford

Mercedes

Volkswagen

Toyota

Volvo

Kia / Hyundai

Nissan

+ Many More

Camera Calibration FAQs

Does my vehicle need ADAS calibration after a windscreen replacement?
If your vehicle has any windscreen-mounted cameras or sensors (such as lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, or adaptive cruise control), then yes — calibration is required after a windscreen replacement. Our team will check your vehicle's specifications and advise you accordingly.
How long does calibration take?
Static calibration typically takes 1–2 hours at one of our branches. Dynamic calibration involves a road test of approximately 20–30 minutes. Some vehicles may require both static and dynamic calibration.
Is ADAS calibration included in the cost of windscreen replacement?
ADAS calibration is an additional service to the windscreen replacement itself. However, many insurance policies cover the cost of calibration as part of the windscreen claim. We will confirm the details with your insurer before any work is carried out.
Can you calibrate all makes and models?
Yes, we have the latest multi-brand diagnostic equipment that covers all major vehicle manufacturers. Whether you drive a Ford, BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Toyota, or any other make, we can calibrate your ADAS systems to factory specifications.
What happens if I skip calibration?
Driving without properly calibrated ADAS is dangerous. Your safety systems may not function correctly, potentially failing to detect hazards or activating at the wrong time. It may also cause your vehicle to fail its MOT and could invalidate your insurance.
How much does ADAS calibration cost?
The cost depends on your vehicle and the type of calibration required (static, dynamic, or both). Many insurance policies include calibration as part of a windscreen claim. For private customers, contact us on 0800 318 711 for a quote specific to your vehicle.
How do I know if my car has ADAS?
Look for features such as lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, or a rain sensor. If your vehicle has any camera or sensor visible near the windscreen or rearview mirror, it likely has ADAS. We can check for you — just call with your registration number.
Can calibration be done at my home or workplace?
Dynamic calibration can be performed as a mobile service. Static calibration requires a controlled environment with specialist target boards, so it is carried out at our workshop. Some vehicles need both types. We will advise you on the best option when you book.
Will my dashboard warning light go off after calibration?
Yes. If an ADAS warning light appeared after your windscreen replacement, proper calibration will clear it. Our diagnostic equipment reads and clears fault codes as part of the calibration process, ensuring all systems are functioning correctly before we sign off the job.
